Don't forget about what Yomif Kejelcha did π
Almost 2 weeks ago, on April 26th, I ran the Antwerp 10miles. I've ran it many times. First as a bet, years ago. Over time I started training more seriously and became faster. I always wanted to break 1h10, but never really succeeded.
Until, 2 weeks ago.
Following my personal best on the 10k in March, I succeeded on this 10mile event breaking my 1h10 barrier, with a finishing time of 1h09min05s. I was thrilled to have finally beaten the target I set many years ago.
However, this event is just a marker in time for me. I re-started my running season in January with as ultimate goal to be at my best when I run the Amsterdam & Valencia marathons at the end of year. So this event was just a check-up of how my fitness is progressing. And with this, I know I'm doing well.
Speaking of marathons and April 26th, on this day at the London marathon, also a barrier was broken. Sabastian Sawe finished in a record time of 1:59:30, finally breaking the 2h mark.
Maybe you've seen it. Or heard about.
I at least got more than enough updates about it, not only via the different running feeds that I follow, but also the brands that worked with Sabastian. Maurten (the energy gel brand that I take during my runs) announced they worked together with Sabastian to get his fueling right. Adidas also launched a video of how he managed this record with their super-shoe.
And why wouldn't you give this amazing performance the publicity that it deserves.
But a lot of people might not be aware of the fact that Sabastian wasn't the only one to break that 2h barrier. Yomif Kejelcha finished in 1:59:41, on his marathon debut! Only seconds after Sabastian.
Unfortunately, not a lot of news or headlines are spent on this.
And that's a pity. His performance is just as amazing. Only slightly slower. So as a passionate (marathon) runner I say, let's not forget about what Yomif Kejelcha did. Let's give him the credit he deserves. And remember his name.
Just like you might remember Buzz Aldrin next to Neil Armstrong, as the second person on the moon.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
