It all ends - for good or for bad ✍️

Life is a constant cycle of change. Nothing remains the same forever, whether for good or bad. This realization struck me after reading Arnold Schwarzenegger’s newsletter, where he quoted writer and philosopher Sam Harris: “No matter how many times you do something, there will come a day when you do it for the last time.”

This idea also surfaced during a recent conversation with my parents about my children. Raising three young boys (some with ASS/ADHD) has often been overwhelming. The exhaustion and mental depletion at the end of each day were the norm for a long time. But lately, I’ve noticed a shift. As they grow and become more independent, we get more moments to take a breath. The difficult moments are decreasing, and signs of positive change are appearing. What once seemed endless and exhausting is slowly transforming into something different, something better.

This principle applies far beyond parenting. So often in life, we find ourselves trapped in difficult situations, feeling like they will never end. But most hardships are temporary. Even the longest, most grueling periods eventually pass. When things feel unbearable, it helps to remember that change is inevitable, and a better outcome is often on the horizon. The key is to endure and keep moving forward.

However, this also works in the opposite direction. The moments we cherish, watching our kids be little, the routines we love, the simple joys of life, will also fade. I see this happening as my children grow up. My oldest son now asks me to drop him off at soccer practice rather than staying there with him. These shifts were not noticeable at first, but now they are undeniable. There will be a last bedtime story, a last time carrying them to bed, a last time they reach for your hand. Sometimes we don’t recognize these moments as lasts until they are gone.

Understanding this duality can change how we approach life.

It can bring comfort during tough times, knowing that things will improve.

At the same time, it serves as a reminder to be present, to cherish the good moments while they last. Because just as difficult times pass, so do the beautiful ones.

So whatever season you’re in, whether struggling through hardship or relishing joy, embrace it.

It won’t last forever.

Nothing does.
