Rewind W18-20 ⏪
As much as I like to write, too much is going on right now that block me from being consistent. And while I enjoyed writing about my weekly adventures, I also got the impression that I lacked depth, and as a result, kept talking about the same things. As a combination of both, I've been missing consistency to publish my weekly rewinds.
I'll continue to share my adventures, but will remove the pressure of doing this weekly.
From now on, I'll be writing these updates as Rewinds.
Enjoy this first edition.
⏪ Rewind
🍝 May is a good month for the boys with some public holidays, and a few days off at school as well. As I and Marge still had to work, the grand parents were happy to host the boys. This gives us some breathing space (you can't image the extra time you get have when the boys are not home), as well as some moments for quality time and good food.
🚘 We've almost come to the end of the final soccer season, which means we have more breathing room over the weekends. As the twins were off to my parents in law, I could spend some quality time with Nelson. He has a great interest in cars, so I went with him to an Abarth museum. It was very nice and even bigger than I thought it would be. I had my X100 with me, resulting in a lot of stops and experimental shots. Nelson was happy, although he was hoping to see more super cars.
🧑✈️ We've been to an open park day in our town. Some bouncing castles and food trucks were present, but the highlight of the day was a flight simulator hosted by a former F16 pilot. He took my son under his wings and thought him a lot about flying and everything to be a successful pilot. He did it with real passion. Unfortunately, the lesson did not end in a success. Nelson crashed when trying to land his jet.
🎾 I've been enjoying padel with my friends. We're finally able to meet weekly, which benefits the intensity and pleasure of our game. Rallies are intense, and we celebrate each point we win. And because of this, and perhaps with increasing temperatures, we're building up some sweat during our 1H30min sessions.
✈️ Marge was off on a business trip for a few days. I think this was the first time she was off for such a long time. Luckily the boys were very helpful, not making it more difficult than it should be. And I somehow went into a hyper-focused state making sure that everything of the boys and household was taken care of. Not that I don't do any of that when my wife is home, but with her off, there was no plan B or someone to remind me.
🎲 We got a new board game from the library, Memoir '44, which has been a hit in the family. It's a WW2 themed strategy game. At first I thought it would be difficult as it was in English and my children don't speak it (yet), but they quickly got accustomed to all cards and instructions. Soon after, a lot of our free time was spent playing the game.
🚙 Last week, we had a public holiday, providing a long weekend, which we took as opportunity to go away with the complete family. The weather wasn't great, but we used every available moment to have an outdoor activity. And for the rest of the time, all children kept each other busy with various crafting, playing and the Memoir board game. I love these type of family gatherings as they provide a nice escape from the daily life and offer great interactions amongst us all. It's been a while since we've had such great laughs.
🏃 I've been consistent in my running, maintaining my daily streak. It makes things easy as I don't need to think about when I should run, or negotiate to go out. I know I have to do it daily, and it works for me. Next week Sunday, I'm running another test, the 20k of Brussels. And after that one, its full on focus towards my marathons, later this year.
📱 I've been working on simplifying my tech stack. It's nice to know about a lot of tools, but it also fragmented my usage, making things a lot more complicated I found out. I did some housekeeping in the apps and subscriptions I have.
- I've put Drafts in the center of many of my actions: keeping track of lists, starting web searches, update Obsidian,...
- I cleaned Mymind and went for a free plan.
- I moved all my reading and RSS feeds to Readwise Reader.
📷 Bits is still my home for my photography and little status updates. Pagecord has been receiving some great updates lately!
📺 Watched
📺 We've been watching Beef (season 2), and I'm trying to watch an episode from time to time of Maul – Shadow Lord.
📺 I finished Daredevil: Born Again (season 2) (4.5/5). I loved it, continuing it's dark atmosphere and coming uncomfortably close to current reality. Again a marvelous performance by Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson 'Kingpin' Fisk.
📚 Reading
- 📗 I continued reading Codename Verity.
📱 Apps in focus
As I did not write a recent app in focus post, I'm putting recommendations back in my rewinds, adding a bit more meat to the bone.
Chess Peace (iOS). I enjoy chess, but it's rather time-consuming to play. Chess Peace offers a nice solution, by using chess peaces in a puzzle mechanism. Put each peace on a limited board, ensuring they can't capture another piece.
Indigo (iOS, macOS). Recently launched as a client merging both Bluesky and Mastodon feeds. I've been using it since it launched and I loved how it brings both feeds together, allowing cross-posting,...
Ghostery (All). A free privacy-focused extension to set and forget. It removes trackers, consent windows, ...
