Weekly rewind - W29 ⏪
Clouds were forming for a heavy rain shower; yet, the sun was still trying to get through.
⏪ Week in rewind
🖥️ Last week, coming back from holidays and starting to work was difficult. I know what I need to do. My task list is perfectly clear and ready to go (thanks to Tana). My inbox has colour coding to show what I should focus on first. And yet, I don't seem to get to it in the way I would want to. Sure, there is the overload of too many things that need attention, or making the switch from not working, but I always feel like a diesel engine that needs a lot of time to ramp up to full speed. I also need to admit that other unproductive things are calling for attention, so with the help of Freedom and other tools I've started to block everything that is not work-related, and that helps (I feel this week).
👂 After discovering Loop earplugs a few years ago, made here in Belgium, I bought a few pairs for different purposes, like sleeping or removing loud sounds. I've been extremely happy about them and can recommend them to everyone. But as my plugs for sleep broke down after years of daily usage, I bought a new set, the Loop Dream. They are a bit on the expensive side, but having tested them for several days, they feel comfortable and do not hurt while sleeping (which I had with other types). 💬 As I've been saving many quotes, I was looking for a way to do a daily review/reminder, just like I do with book/article highlights via Readwise. This to ensure I remember or act on them instead of adding them to another pile for later. I initially experimented with Thoughts and Napkin to store and resurface quotes, but eventually, I settled for a themed review with Readwise. Many quotes were already there, so by adding a quote tag and specifying that for my themed review, I now get a daily reminder to review these quotes.
⛺ Nelson left for a 10-day youth camp, and while the twins are still at home, the dynamic in the family has changed. With only 2 out of 3 boys remaining, they are seeking more interactions & comfort with each other, giving us more breathing space and time to relax and read, instead of keeping them entertained. Not that Nelson is the bad one, but with 3 it often seems that 1 is left out and things can get out of hand quickly.
📺 Watched
📺 The Bear - season 4. We managed to finish it last week, and I loved it.
📺 Vikings. I restarted Vikings, into Season 3 now. Still a long way to go.
📚 Reading
📗 Imperium by Robert Harris. Set in the Roman age, focusing on the rise to glory of Cicero through the eyes of his secretary Tiro. A page-turner, and I loved it.
📗 Lustrum by Robert Harris. After finishing Imperium, I immediately started to read the next book of the trilogy.
📗 Meditations for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman
🎧 World without End by Ken Follett
📱 Apps in focus
Focus Flight (iOS/Mac). I only yesterday became aware of this app (thanks to Hiro) and I've been using it non-stop for the current day, draining the battery of my phone as I just couldn't put it down. In essence, it acts like a focus timer, where you set a time and work for that specific duration. However, while I tried many other focus timers (like Forest), Focus Flight sets itself apart via its execution. With each focus session, you book a flight to a nearby destination, check in and board, to see yourself travel to that destination on the map, with x time and distance to go. I love this! Since I opened the app, I've been taking one flight after the next, travelling the world. Focus flight can also be connected to your screen time and block apps while travelling, making sure you can't do anything else besides focusing. Get this app!
Thoughts (iOS). A simple app to keep track of quotes or thoughts and revisit them via a daily feed, collections or tags. Entry can be done via typing or text scanning. It's simple, but it works really well.
